Our sweet first-time mama, Spice, kindled early this morning. We couldn't be happier! Spice had three beautiful babies and did such a great job. Since I've been rather quiet on our blog and social media lately due to other commitments, I thought I would first introduce you to Spice and give you some background on her litter. Here we go! |
This is Spice, our lovely solid tort doe. She was born in September of 2015 to Vienna and Coby. She is one of my favorite does we've produced and I've loved watching her grow up. Look at what a cute baby she was! I was planning on showing Spice as a senior doe at our fair this year and had high hopes for her. Unfortunately, the doe that I was planning to breed ended up sustaining an injury that left her unable to breed. It happened rather suddenly, and the breeding deadline for fair was fast approaching, so I decided to breed Spice at the last minute. I linebred her to her sire, Coby. Wow, she was the hardest doe I've ever bred! (She can be stubborn :) I wasn't sure if she would take or not and didn't feel much of anything when I palpated her. However, towards the end of her pregnancy, she started to show typical nesting behavior. We began to get excited!
Spice built a lovely nest and pulled fur a couple of days before her due date. Sure enough, on the morning she was due, I walked into the rabbitry to find babies! First-time moms commonly lose litters due to various reasons, so we are very thankful for a healthy litter! Also, no peanuts! It looks like Spice had two solid torts and one broken tort. (Fun fact: Spice had a solid tort sister and a broken tort brother in the litter she was born in.) Although it's too early to say for sure, it looks as if the broken and one of the solids are does, and the other solid is a buck. Time will tell, though!
